It’s quite an interesting world we’re living in today. Global connectivity and social media have rapidly changed the way humans interact and perceive the world around them. It’s very easy to fall into the mindset that these innovations have had a detrimental effect on human relationships and have ultimately had a negative impact on the world. I’m starting to observe this trend more and more. We tend to blame many of the problems with our society on these technologies and lately there just seems to be such a negative outlook on life in 2019.
I understand that there is certainly potential for abuse and that spending the majority of your time buried in your phone usually isn’t healthy. I would also argue that technological advances and global connectivity have introduced a realm of possibilities that we’ve yet to even begin to conceptualize the true power of. We love to amplify the negative things going on around us, while the vast majority of people on this planet are trying to live peacefully. I think this can be attributed to the fact that the potential for human life on Earth has never been greater. Let’s not forget that we are less than 100 years removed from global conflict. Many diseases have been cured and living conditions have vastly improved for the majority. It’s easy to harp on the negative when we’re constantly judging based on how great things could be, but we must remember that more importantly, things could be that great.
With that being said, there is still much work to be done. The Internet has started to expose many of the perennial wrongdoings that have long gone unchecked in our society. We are now connected in a way that will allow for gradual improvement across the board. We’ve already made incredible strides in a variety of areas. Instead of being so quick to blame social media for our problems, let’s instead try to understand the potential for abuse and shape our habits accordingly. Take advantage of the opportunity to follow inspiring people, movements, and ideas. It’s all perspective.
